No icon on desktop

I am not able to see any icon on dekstop in normal as well as in safe mode.Did msconfig(clean boot up )but no result.Booted the computer in safe mode no help.Tried to do system restore but not working.Need help............................................
 
Try running Ad-Aware, www.lavasoft.nu, to check for spyware.

I just fixed a computer for someone using Win98; it would boot, taskbar
flash briefly, then no icons or taskbar. After some tweaks to get it to
boot to File Manager, I was able to scan with Ad-Aware, removing over 500
entries. The pc then booted normally.

A follow-up virus scan also revealed a Trojan.

I believe you can R-click on a blank area of the task bar & choose to hide
or show desktop icons in XP. If that doesn't work try on the desktop or
start button. HTH

Restart in safe mode, see if you can get to a desktop then.

spyware removers also.I checked the hide icon options also but didn't work.
 
The menu your refering to is on the desktop. Right click Place arrow over
"arrange icons by" then (on the new menu that pops up" click "Show Desktop
Icons"
 
My son was using my pc and got hit by Gagse, a program that opens around 4 thousand "error 53, no file found" windows. we deleted all of the files this made, deleted the gagse program. Now we have no icons either. I can not right click on desktop, no icons, the space bar is missing (this i fix by using the windows key the one next to control and alt. then right clicking next to the log off button, say hide task bar, move curser over taskbar then quickly click lock taskbar and unclick hide

i am not sure if this is the same problem you are having, but was hoping someone could help with it. hopefully fixing yours and mine

Hi Lea,

That is a serious one, for sure. :o) It copies itself to 8 other areas as
well as:
a.. %Windir%\Desktop\Gagse.exe

I would first be sure that all remnants have been removed via:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.gase.intd.html

And/or from there would suggest a repair install. Good luck!

Ok, I did the first two things you said, after reinstalling windows XP things got worse. I posted in another spot since I could not find this thread at first
Basicly after the first reboot I now have a blank screen, I get the start up screen then nothing. I am afraid I have killed my fairly new PC

I am now using a friends computer, I had the problem of no icons, taskbar and unusable desktop after getting the gagse attack. A user here (sorry forget name) advised the symantec site for cleaning and a reinstall of windows. I followed the directions on each, at first the reinstall did great. I had windows back, desktop back, but my screen resolution etc was way off. ok monitor etc was not installed now, no surprise. I put in the monitor disc which said it had documentation and drivers for the Dell E773c color monitor. All i could see on the disc was the documentation. So I did what I have done in the past with win 98, tried to use the plug in play to install the monitor. I shut down, booted up and saw the normal boot up screen, with option for f2-setup and f12-boot in top right as usual. only after the normal boot up screen the screen goes blank. The pc seems to be working but nothing on monitor. so went from no desktop to no computer!
Any help with this would be great!

I too have this problem and it has me completely thumped... I've tried putting in explorer.exe after bringing up the task manager and going file, new task, run, browse.... I don't want to do a quick restore as some people have suggested... any quick way to resolve this? Sidne
