No freakin sound

Ok...now I¹m usually at home with Macs and I decided to build a PC.
Everything is running fine except the sound.

I cant get any sound out of this thing.

I figured I needed to update the motherboard drivers. So I did. Updated the
onboard sound drivers. Then I got a PCI 5.1 Channel soundcard and still no
sound. I updated its drivers and guess what?? No freakin sound.

Now I love Macs and never really got into PCs. I¹m really keen on getting
this puppy up and running so I can do what my Mac can¹t (or takes a billion
apps to achieve).

So...any ideas?

First, don't post in HTML... It screws up some news clients.

Secondly, do you have speakers?

What kind of sound are you looking for? I'm sure you'll hear something if
you roll the case down the stairs. If you want stereo sound you have to roll
the monitor and case down at the same time.

: )

Honestly, how are your speakers connected and did you check the volume
control and mixer levels?

Throwing the PC down the stairs is tempting...I'm a mac user remember? ; )

I just finished a rant about how the new Mac Mini is way underpowered. I was
hoping for more. : (
Ok, I have connected earphones because I don¹t have external speakers and I
get no sound. Checked the sound control panel and all levels are at maximum
and mute is disabled. I have even connected the headphones to the 5.1 sound
card with no success.

Headphones won't do it... Need amplified speakers.
Question: Would it make any dofference that I have the on board drivers and
5.1 card drivers active in the system? Should I only have one assigned set
of drivers for the sound? I figured if the onboard sound wasn¹t working then
a PCI sound card would be a simple solution.

I'd just get the onboard working before tossing another card into the mix.

If you don't have any amplified PC speakers, you could get away with using a
stereo with Line In (Tape in or Monitor will do. Don't use Phono).

It's the green jack you want to use for the speakers.

Sorry didn't realise it was in HTML...I'm new in this building so their
system is already configured

You got it, worth a try, i had an old POS box with an AOpen board, picked up
a new creative card, loaded the drivers, all seemed cool, but, no sound.
Disabled the onboard crap, voila!

Cool thanks Noozer...I'll try and get the amplified speakers this weekend
and take it from there.

When I plug the headphones into the headphone jack I still don't get audio.
Shouldn't it theoretically work even without the amped speakers?

There is no "headphone" jack on a PC.

Mic in
Line in
Line out

On the CD drive there is a headphone (?) jack, but that's for CD audio only.

No freakin soundA very common mistake is in configuration. Goto Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices and make sure your card is selected under the "Audio" and "Voice" tabs. Next, open the mixer that came with the soundcard and you should be able to configure your speakers for headphones somewhere within that program (the help file might have info.) You should be able to do the same with your onboard sound by changing the settings to that device as source in Control Panel.

Oh...don't get me started on the mini Mac. Whenever Apple promises something
that¹s too good to be true...it often is. Its a toy at best. I'll just file
it away with other Apple fads that flopped..ala Cube and (under)Perfomas
