Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties. Hardware,
Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Look in Event Viewer at the System and Application logs for Warning or
Error report and post a copy here You can access Event Viewer by
selecting Start, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;enus;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message(email) and do a paste into the body of the
message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

Hope this helps.

Have you uninstalled any DVD software recently? Is it recognized in
bios? If have remove a dvd related software you might have to reset some
registry setting. Have a look here
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314060

Check eventviewer for any error or warnings in the application log and
system log relating to the drive. Check device manager for any warning
relating to your optical drives, if non run a virus and spyware check.

I am having this problem, and none of the suggestions here helped me. If
someone could post more suggestions on how to fix this, that would be great.
I am the admin of a computer running WinXP Home SP2. Please, if you can help,
I would appreciate it, and thanks in advance for any help.

What does the device manager show?
is there an entry concerning the drive with a yellow ? or a red x? Is a code
listed?

I have a Memorex CD/DVD player that is a couple of years old, and it has
worked fine, but just in the past day I have discovered that my Exteranl DVD
does not have a region set, and Windows XP will not allow me to set it to
Region 1. Microsoft has information on its site about a entry that can be
made to the registry that will identify the region, but it is so cryptic that
I have been unable to figure out exactly how to do the entry. When the CD/DVD
maker has not flashed a region into their fireware, Windows XP makes it
impossible to change to the region that you want. I have gone to Memorex
support to ask about this, but have not received a reply. The reason that
DVD is not recognized, is probably because it doesn't have a region
assignment. My DVD-RW and CD-R RW work fine, only the DVD-R +R doesn't work,
and this is because of the Region 1 SNAFU!!!!!!
