Hi
I hope someone can help me. My Compaq Evo N115 will not
recognise my dvd/cd rom combo drive. I have tried using
Device Manager in an attempt to force XP Pro to recognise
the DVD/CD Rom but no luck. I cannot even see the DVD/CD
drive in Exploring (it normally appears as an 'E:' drive.)

Please help. Desperate!!

"Code 39" sound like the kind of error that may be fixed by the Registry
editing that MS suggested, or by:

http://www.dougknox.com/xp/scripts_desc/xp_cd_dvd_fix.htm

(If you can't manually edit your registry, this may not help. It's worth a
try, though)

Accessing the BIOS setup has nothing to do with XP. It's specific to the
maker's BIOS. A quick look at the HP web site indicates that the key on the
Evo is F10.

(It would be a good idea to see whether the drive is recognized in the BIOS,
although "Code 39" pretty much indicates that it is. I hope that the Compaq
BIOS permits you to see what devices it recognizes; the Compaq desktop
BIOSes I've ssen in the past hid more than they showed.)

The larger question is why you can't edit the Regsitry. Are you using a
company-issued laptop, with Regedit disabled? If so, check with your IT
department. (There are other ways to be locked out of Regedit. I once made
the error of installing Earthlink's "software" while I was a subscriber: the
package helpfully locked out changes to the Registry. I forget how I delat
with that, but a re-format was probably involved.)

Best of luck.
