No desktop, taskbar, next to nothing available!?

Hi,
Bear with me since I still operate in the NT world. My daughters
WinXPPro was installed ~2 years ago on an HP pavilion 6648C (AMD
processor) 256 Mb memory with 20Gb HD (10 Gb free). It was running,
albeit slowly , til now...
Upon startup her desktop appears empty (no icons), I cannot find the
taskbar (on any side of the screen) - very confusing. I can iniate a 3
fingered salute (ctrl-alt-del) and I get the task manager program. I
am the novice here but I dont see anything unusual running. I could
start something at this point if I knew what would help bring back
these essential items.
This machine has not been connected to the 'net since early May and
virus scan (McAfee) finds no problems. I don't know how to account for
what happened - if she did something or it happened on its own.
Of course this problem crops up since she is headed back to school
tomorrow (Wednesday) and could certainly use it. I will have some
(limited) access to the machine after that point.
Any thoughts on getting back the taskbar and icons? TIA.

Item No. 195 (right column), click on "Restore Desktop Icons and Taskbar".

Install the registry fix, then reboot your computer.

Thanks for the advice. I went to the site and downloaded a script
1)#195 named "xp_taskbar_desktop_fixall.vbs" to a floppy
2) walked to the other (problem) PC and logged on
3) started task manager and ran the script from the floppy
4) the script said it would restart explorer shell & OK finished
5) nothing happened (did it 3 times - 1 a cold boot)
Still no taskbar or icons!
Any help is appreciated...

OK, the HP was packed up and moved to school, having no taskbar or
icons. We contacted someone there who planned to look at this problem.
Well dang me - she plugs the HP in and starts it up - taskbar and all
icons are now back!? The system is internet connected and the most
used features were tested and found to be working. The fix you pointed
me to seems to have worked but took more than one cold boot to take
effect. Strange...
