windows xp modem can't find a dail tone to connect to
internet?? how do i fix this??
thanks

Fact that XP talks to modem computer and gets a No Dialtone
message suggests that everything is just fine from computer to
'computer on modem'. Software drivers not likely a problem.
'No Dialtone Detected' is the classic error message of
hardware problems on phone line side of modem.

Modem would have two plugs. Plug phone into second plug and
make a phone call. Phone connected to phone line via modem
means modem is connected to phone line. Some (but very few)
modems care which of two slots the phone line is connected
to. Make sure phone line is into 'phone line' receptacle and
not into 'telephone' receptacle.

Now bypass that that fancy XP software and talk more
directly to modem. The program (provided in all Windows) is
called Hyperterminal. Use Hyperterminal to talk from keyboard
and screen directly to modem computer:

Again, 'No Dialtone Detected' is a typically a hardware
problem on phone line side of modem. But the most common
reason for this failure is surge that entered the building on
AC electric, passed through modem, and found earth ground on
phone line. Short of soldering component, your only
alternative is a new modem. This only after confirming that
even Hyperterminal cannot get modem detect a dialtone; cannot
get modem to dial in response to the 'ATDTxxx-xxxx' command
(xx... being a phone number).

If your using the modem cable that came with the modem this is probably a
driver issue - are you using the microsoft provided driver for your modem ?
Think again.

Its probably based on the conexant chipset - open the PC take the modem out
look for anything which will identify it post back here and I might be able
to link you to the manufacturer`s site for XP drivers.

All this is very true it is likely to be becuase the user has plugged the
modem cable into the wrong place on his modem > however even if his system
can communicate with the driver doesn`t mean it`ll ring out and make an
internet connection.

So he could still have a driver issue > once he has connected his modem to
the phone line we shall see.
