Boot your system with your WinXP CD, select Repair, then
Recovery Console. Now run these commands:
fixmbr
fixboot
exit

I tried the boot from cd and used the recovery console...
use fixmbr and fixboot...
the computer rebooted and attempted to boot from drive c and I recieved the
same message that I have been receiving as follows:

A disk error has occuried
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

Is is possible that the drive ahs contacted the "Worm" virus?

Thanks for any help...

I'm getting a little confused. In your first post you mentioned
that you saw the message "invalid system disk". In your next
post you wrote that you received the same message as before,
namely "A disk error has occuried". Now even after I changed
my glasses, these two messages don't quite look the same to
me!

The first message might be generated by a damaged boot
environment, hence my advice to run fixboot etc.

The second message might be generated by a flawed disk,
which is something entirely different. Download and run
the diagnostic tool that your disk manufacturer makes
available on his home site, then report the result.

Invalid System Disk?
I'm sure it can't be as simple as having a blank floppy shoved in.
But I'm throwing that out there anyway.

You also might want to check the boot order in your CMOS. At least make
sure that's not messed up before you try anything drastic.

I downloaded from western digital a diag hd tool from floppy disk .
used wd dlg diag 5.04g
ran quick test with no errors detected
ran extended media test (full media scan) with no errors detected
what can i do next?
Thanks!

You could now attempt to boot the machine with a WinXP
boot diskette in order to find out if the boot environment or
Windows itself is damaged. Here is how it's done:

- Format a floppy disk on some other WinXP/2000 PC.
Don't do it on a Win9x PC - it won't work.
- Copy these files from the \i386 folder of your WinXP CD to A:\
ntldr
ntdetect.com
- Create a file a:\boot.ini with these lines
[Boot Loader]
Timeout=3
Default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows XP"
/fastdetect
- Boot the machine with this floppy
