XP Pro SP1 (no update to 1a)
Plextor 708A
Plextor W2410A

As suggested in the subject line, these devices no longer refresh when new media is added: the names, etc remain as whatever was in the drives when the system started. Not even a manual 'refresh' forces new information to be displayed. The devices also do not autoplay when media is inserted.

Direction/suggestions appreciated.

Try setting a restore point so you can return to it, and (if you can) try
going back a ways to a different restore point and see if it works then. If
so, it's due to past virus activity (I've even seen it make the floppy
unresponsive!) that tries to keep you from doing a repair via the Windows OS
CD. It's a particularily nasty virus, too. I've always found my favorite
arsenal of AVG, Ad-aware6, Spybot, SpaywareBlaster (and now SpywareGuard) to
fix the problems with the drives - once I could get them on! Sometimes I've
had to network up to get them on because moving the HDD to another machine
to use antivirus on it did not correct the problem in of itself. After
getting rid of compromisers, MS updates might solve the drives issue too. I
doubt that you have a hardware problem.

I seem to have solved the issue(s) by running the program "autofix.exe" from Microsoft.

Thanks,
