No Audio after Windows XP Updates Installed

Every time I install these updates for Win XP, I lose my audio. The only way I have found to correct it is to restore the system back to the way it was before the update install. Any ideas as to what may be causing this or another way to fix it?

What happens when you install the drivers from the *maker* of the audio
hardware you have (which you don't mention at all)?
