Wayne B.

I have a LAN setup at my home that consists of 2 XP
machines(Home & Pro) physically connected by a 5 port
switch. I have no problem getting full access to Pro from
the Home machine, I double click on Home within their
workgroup,it opens up right then and there and everything
is available to me. But I need a password to get access to
the Home machine from the Pro.

(Same subnet, workgroup, can ping each other, etc.)

When I double click on Home, the user name space is greyed
out, only the password space is available to input
anything. The only password that exists on the Home
machine is for an administrative account that I created on
the Home machine (and that password) is not getting me
access.

I figure that there must be something that I must have
to do on the Home machine that will allow other machines
to gain access to it. My problem is that I don't know what
the hell it is.??

Could someone enlighten me on this and let me know what
it is that I missed?

Wayne,

On the Pro machine, is Simple File Sharing enabled or disabled? If
disabled, check the Local Security Policy (Control Panel -
Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security Options, look
at "Network access: Sharing and security model", and ensure it's set
to "Classic - local users authenticate as themselves".

If you're going to access Home from Pro, you have to have a non-blank
password on the account on the Pro machine. If SFS is disabled, and
the Local Security Policy is set to "Guest only...", you'll have to
have a non-blank password for the Guest account.

Cheers,
Chuck

Run the Network Setup Wizard on the Home machine to fully enable file
sharing. That's usually all that's needed:

XP ICS - Starting the Network Setup Wizard
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/networksetupwiz.htm

If that doesn't fix it, the problem could be that the Guest account is
disabled for network access or that it has a password. To enable the
Guest account for network access, type this command in the Start | Run
box:

net user guest /active:yes

To remove the password from the Guest account:

1. Click Start | Run.

2. Enter this command in the box, then click OK:

control userpasswords2.

3. Click Guest.

4. Click Reset Password.

5. Click OK without entering a new password.
