My brother in-law has a home network consisting of two computers, they are
connected by a crossover cable.
Until recently he could access windows update on both computers but now he
can access any site with the primary computer but on the secondary computer
he can access any site bar any microsoft site. e.g windows update,
microsoft.com or microsoft.com.au.
Any ideas.

What do you get if you try to ping any of those hosts? Do you get a public
IP returned?
What does he see in the browser window when he tries to go to
www.microsoft.com?
Have you scanned for spyware/malware/viruses?
