After reinstalling XP, I haven't had access to my add
remove programs feature (i can install programs, but i
can't get into the "add/remove" program to uninstall). I
have also had other problems being denied access to new
documents. I am the only user and am the administrator,
no network etc. Any ideas?

If you are admin and not in a network and can't gain access to the add/remove function it would seem like your Xp installation might be corrupt. Have you tried running a repear?

Max - How do go about running a repair? i just searched
the knowlege base and the help function on my computer
and got as far as doing a system restore - which probably
wouldn't help since i haven't had access since
reinstalling xp altogether. Thanks for your help. Mary

Mary,

What is the specific message you're getting, if any? If its along the lines of "you don't have access....... contact your Administrator", this may be a simple Registry edit.

Click Start, Run and enter REGEDIT Go to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Uninstall

Look in the right pane for a value called NoAddRemovePrograms. If the value exists, it should be set to 0 (zero). If not, double click this value and change it. If it doesn't exist, right click in a blank area of the right pane and select, New, DWord value. Name it NoAddRemovePrograms and leave it set at 0.

If you're getting a different error message, post back with the exact details.

I have gotten that type of message for other things on
many occasions (trying to access documents, windows media
player etc.) However with the add/remove program, I do
not get any error message, it seems to "ignore" me when I
click the link- no response at all. I have tried to go to
Windows Help and access the program from there, but it
gives me the message: "The operating system could not
start this program. This may happen if: your computer is
on a network, you need to install hardware...." with
several other generic possibilities.

Also, even though it doesnt give me the error message you
suggested, I checked the registry editor - In the
policies folder there is no uninstall, only an "explorer"
folder. Don't know if that is relevant.

I have exactly the same symptoms as Mary. Windows 2k server, logged i
as admin, double clicking, pressing enter, right click start etc on th
Add/Remove Programs button does nothing. Just like the anti spa
solution I recently installed which also does nothing so now I want t
remove it but can't.

Any one have any ideas
