What would stop Windows 98 PC's from accessing Windows XP PC's:

The usernames and passwords are correct - none are blank.
XP PC's work fine between each other
XP PC's can connect to resources hosted by the 98 PC's
98 PC's can connect to resources hosted by the other 98 PC.

Thanks,
Jason.

Have already disabled all the firewalls

Greetings --

Have you made sure that the file permissions are set properly on
the WinXP machine? You might find some that you've overlooked at one
of these sites:

Can the win98 PC's 'ping' the WinXP PCs by name, or IP address?

Do all the machines have the =same= userIDs and passwords?

What, if any, error message do you get, or can you just not see the XP
PCs from the Win98 ones at all? What workgroup name did you use for the
WinXP PCs (the default is different from the win98 default .. not sure
if that would be a big problem, since I always change mine anyway).

- Yes ping and Internet traffic is fine (proxy server hosted on XP PC)
Do all the machines have the =same= userIDs and passwords?
- Yes should have mentioned that I use the same user names and passwords
(NT has to)

- When I click on the computer name (the PC names show up in in explorer
but that is as far as I can get) I am asked for the password of \\xpc\IPC$
- See above - XP PC's can connect to the 98 PC's
- the workgroup name is allen on all computers - hence the PC's show up in
the same place without having to go to a different place in explorer or
typing in the computer name in the address line at the top of explorer

Hope this helps.

Yes - I am a member of administrators so if this was the problem then
something is also stopping the administrators group. The connection was
working but suddenly stopped. I have no idea why.

Make sure, you assign the IP address from the 98 Win Pc, to the Firewalls on
your Win XP Pcs as Trusted IP addresses.

Checked through all the web sites listed but nothing new that I haven't
checked. MS's site/page is too basic to even consider.

Sorry,
Already done this immediately after I setup firewall software and well
before this problem occured.

Check that the Workgroup name is the same! Default for 98 is
WORKGROUP, for XP is MSHOME.
