Sorry, a double typo. That last one should be news.albasani.net

I can't get Outlook Express or WLM to download any newsgroups from
news.albasani.net

OK, then try one of the others. I particularly like eternal-september

You appear to be using eternal-september. Is there
a problem with that? I switched to them when Microsoft
decided to stop hosting their own groups. I've found
them to be very dependable. Much more so than
Microsoft, in fact. Their server used to have a message-
losing episode periodically.

I also like the (apparent) attitude of ES:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_September

I suppose their name could be interpreted as an
in-crowd, geek arrogance, but I think of it as a kind
of idealism: That it's worth maintaining the Internet
in its manifestation as a town green for citizens to
meet, and not just leave the whole thing to degenerate
into a commercial venue for selling various e-pacifiers
to passive "consumers".

(I'm often struck by the way that even mainstream
media, like the NYT, refer to people as users or
consumers where electronic gadgets or the Internet
are concerned. It indicates that the national psyche
[at least in the US] already experiences these technologies
as merely mobiles in our cribs: for use to avoid crying
out of boredom. Thus millions play Farmville, but very
few, at this point, have even heard of newsgroups.)

(or, for that matter, real farms.)

Have you seen this? Probably a lot out of context, but then, maybe not all that far from the truth:

I sort of felt that way, too, especially after watching a couple of the other clips. No one needs to know how to read,
write in script, or do math in their head or on paper any more. Even the fast food burger joints don't have much
writing/printing on the registers; just pictures of their stuff. I find it much fun to wait until I've given a cashier
(any store, any where) a $20 bill to pay for something, and then the pennies. You can almost smell the brain cells
frying. I once saw a young girl at Belk's call for a manger because she couldn't figure out the change without a
calculator, and she didn't have one. I had already told her what it should be, but I guess she didn't trust a
grey-haired ol' fart like me :-)
