I know that there are other newsreaders out there. I know I can do a Google
search on "newsreaders" [or "newsreader"] and use several other search
engines, but I would like to know how actual users feel about them.

By the way, I am neither anti or pro Microsoft. I just want the best product
for the job.

Thank you,

Barry Karas

I use Thunderbird for news and mail, but I know many that just use it
for News.

That depends. What features make a newsreader "best" in your estimation? If
you don't specify any criteria, all you'll get it what's best for other
people. Outlook Express is all I need.

I also use Gravity, now it's Super Gravity, and have since they made it
many, many, moons ago. It's the best text reader I've ever tried, and
I've tried most of them on most platforms. While it can do Binary
groups/downloads, I've not used it for that.

I use an older version of Agent.

I also use Forte Agent. I like version 2. They have a free version and a paid
version.

40tude is the best reader, and it is free.

I use Forte Agent version 3 for the public newsgroups. I also use
Outlook Express for some other newsgroups.

I prefer Agent, because I have trained myself to use newsgroups in a
way that is well suited to the capabilities of Agent, such as getting
new messages in "headers only" mode, automatically marking empty
headers is read when the next new batch of headers are downloaded,
automatically putting a "watch thread" flag on any thread that I
participate in, marking certain messages to be retained indefinitely
and automatically deleting others after a set number of days; and so
forth.

Many of these capabilities are found in other newsreaders as well, but
some are not, or they operate a bit differently than they do in Agent.
So I stick with Agent, and will continue to do so unless and until
some additional functionality is needed that is beyond the
capabilities of Agent.

I use an old version of Agent (1.11) and it has never failed me. My
only "problem" which is recent is due to Earthlink now requiring SMTP
Authentication for sending mail. My version is too old to support that
so if I want to send email as well as news response will have to
update.
