hey all,
i noticed that there's this msdn newsgroup and then there's an msdn forum.
what's the difference?

thanks,
rodchar

a newsgroup is hosted (originally) on a news (NNTP protocol) server, and is
the same as a UseNet newsgroup. For example, Google Groups has an index of
all Usenet groups going back some 23+ years (including these Microsoft groups
which are hosted on the msnews.microsoft.com NNTP server).

A forum is a hosted discussion board usually powered by a database "back-end".

Microsoft, Google and others also provide a web - based user interface for
newsgroups that makes them "look like" a forum.

AFAIK, the forums (in many cases) are just a web interface into the
newsgroups. And, not a terribly good one, judging from the number of
misplaced posts I see every day coming from the "forums".

AFAIK, the forums (in

side question if ok, anyone know a website to cross-reference these chat
acronyms?

The forums are easier to ask questions, because most people already have a
Windows Live account, but may not know how to set up a newsreader.

The newsgroups are much much easier to answer questions, because it
automatically highlights new questions, replies to our answers, etc. A good
newsreader is also much quicker, because just the text of the posts are
transferred without a whole bunch of HTML, javascript (and advertising) junk
alongside.

If they cannot setup a newsreader (OE for example) I do not want technical
answers from them : ) :)

I was discussing the possibility of askers, not answerers, being unable to
set up the newsreader.
