Hi frequent newsgroup users,

I have a question, as a new visitor to this site. Why
don't I get results when I do a search for newsgroups
posts that I know for sure are there? I just posted to
the "Basics" newsgroup and then tried to do a search for
my message. The search didn't return any results, and I
had cut and pasted the Subject line of my post into the
Subject of the Search!

Thanks for any help.

These news groups are accessible from many servers. The answer would depend
upon which news server you are using to post and view the news groups with.
Some servers take hours for a new post to appear. Another limiting factor
could be your news reader settings. If the group is active like this one,
receiving many posts per day, and your news reader is only set to download
200 headers, you'd only receive the last 200, and the hundreds in between
would be missing. If that's the problem change the Read Option to get a
larger number of headers at time. Mine is set at 1000. To view messages
which you might have missed, use Google. The news group search engine is
fast, if you know how to use key words and phrases (enclose exact key
phrases in quotes) for what you're searching for. Click the link below for
this news group at Google:

http://tinyuri.com/g97a

then type what you're looking for in the Search box, then click the option
to search ONLY in this group, then click the Google Search button. Another
plus is that Google archives the posts for years.

The link was very long, so I went to http://www.tinyuri.com where a long
link is converted to a smaller link. To find other groups at Google, go to:

http://www.google.com

Click the Groups tab, type the group you're looking for, click the Google
Search button.
Tip: When you go to a group that you will frequent often, add it to your
Favorites, or put it on your Start menu. I have this group on my Start
Menu. The Google interface and search engine are good for quickly finding
and reading posts, especially older ones. Also, I don't have to waste drive
space archiving older posts, because Google saves them for years. But, for
posting I prefer Outlook Express.

Hi T. C.,

Thanks for the tips.

I'm using the web based reader for this news group. I
again tried putting the text of my subject into the
Subject line. However, the search still didn't locate my
message. I don't think there is any way to download
headers in a web based reader, is there. I was unable to
find any options to change the number of headers to
download in the web based reader through Tools>Options,
for example.

In the case that I cited initially I actually waited a
couple of hours before I tried my search for my message.
I located the message first, then copied the subject.
Then I went to the newsgroup search and pasted my subject
into the Subject line of the search window. The search
should have returned my message, but didn't.

Thanks for any insights on what I might be doing wrong.

At Google "groups" use key phrases enclosed in quotes, use the search engine
(e.g. if I were looking for responses to a post that I made about a repair
install, I would type "repair install" "t.c." and then click the Google
Search button). When I talked about changing the number of downloaded
headers, I meant for non-web based news readers like Outlook Express. If
you're using a web based news reader, other than Google, then perhaps the
server doesn't archive the posts. Some news servers only keeps posts for 24
hours. Or if you posted recently, some web based servers can take as long
as a day to show a post in a non-moderated group. Moderated groups can take
days for a post to show.

Hi T. C.,

O. K. I went to Google and took your suggestion. I was
able to view all the posts to my message without opening
each header.

However, can you please explain why it is necessary to
take such a convoluted path just to view something posted
to a newsgroup? Why shouldn't this be viewable directly
in Microsoft's newsgroup web based reader? I don't really
do this very often. Just when I have a particular
question that I can't solve. It may be 12 months till I
have another. Hopefully I'll remember what I need to do
to view messages. I'm sure I won't remember the required
link, however. That's all just so much gobble-de-gook.

While you and most that have posted to this message seem
to understand the process quite well, I doubt that there
are a good majority of others that do. This has got to
discourage many from posting or getting information from
Microsoft newsgroups.

Bottom line: why can't this be kept simple?

Thanks for the input from all of you so far.

Because this is a web-based gui for what is really a newsgroup. Rather
than trying to use the wrong tool for the job, you'd be better off and
get far more out of this resource if you learn to use a newsreader.
There are many good newsreaders for Windows, but you can use Outlook
Express since you already have it. Here are some links to information

Basically the MSoft Web based reader, as at present implemented, is a
bodged effort at getting to newsgroups. It causes a lot of trouble
such as you are experiencing, and gives its users entirely wrong
impressions of what to expect. Do yourself a favor and set up a news
account in Outlook express, to use the server msnews.microsoft.com (no
logon is needed). Then once you have done an initial retrieve of say
1000 headers turn off the limit on the number to get (in Outlook Express
- Tools - Options - Read) or you will find yourself missing hunks - this
group runs around 1000 a day

Then realise that people responding to the groups are doing it - for
free - in their own time, and are all around the world - it can that
over 24 hours for your post to be noticed by an appropriate person. So
be patient
