What's up with these messages? I've received two in the
past week and not sure if I should install the updates. I
keep my computer up to date with "Windows Update", but
these last two emails scare me a little. I haven't run
either of them but if someone can enlighten me on what
they are and if I should run them I'd appreciate it.

It's a virus. MS doesn't notify via email

Do not open the attachments, whatever you do. Delete the messages.

There is also one in this NG tonight that says it is from Microsoft. Don't
dare ever execute any attachments in here unless you have run a virus
scanner over tham and then I would go to one of the online scanners and so
it again. It takes only seconds to check, but it only takes micro seconds to
become infected.

MS never send files by email. They will be carrying a virus - usually the
Swen.

In Outlook Express, when in your Inbox, go to View, Layout and switch off
your Preview pane since some of these sorts of messages carry destructive
code within the message body which can be activated as soon as the message
is previewed. Better still install a freeware like Mailwasher which lets you
look at the messages safely in plain text before they even reach your PC and
filter out the ones which are actually baddies. None of the ones labelled
MS Security Patch or Update or Network Patch or any one of a hundred similar
titles are anything else but malicious. In Mailwasher you will see that
these files are nearly all about 140-160kb. Nearly all of them will be
marked as 'Not Addressed to Me' by Mailwasher. Some of them (apparantly) are
on very authenic looking paper with a cute Microsoft Style picture on it.
