I need to write a simple program for my IPaq 2215 (USB cradle), which meant
I needed
VS.Net 2003, which meant I needed to upgrade from Win98, to run VS.Net
I installed and activated Win XP Pro (clean) on a newly formatted D:
partition [Still running Win98 on C:]
I also bought OfficeXP and loaded it, and VS.Net 2003 (not in that order).
I already had the IPaq 2215, and installed the license of ActiveSync that
the IPaq came with.
I don't have internet access at home (broadband at work has always been
sufficient), but I decided I might as well get whatever service packs and
updates were out there, just to have an up-to-date everything. I couldn't
find a better way, so I downloaded all the files I could find related WinXP
on the MS downloads page, took them home, and installed everything that I
could. (it appears the automatic upgrade file selection only works for PCs
that can connect to the internet? It kept trying to check my work PC.)
Last night I wrote a test program just to make sure I could deploy it to
the IPaq (or even the emulator) in VS.Net- basically just a form with 2
labels and a button, main menu and SIP (nothing fancy, and only 2 lines of
code so nothing that would cause a crash). It still didn't work on the
emulator, so I decided to cradle the Ipaq and just test it directly.
The moment I cradled the IPaq (which I hadn't done since before I installed
Office) WinXP hung requiring a hard reboot. On subsequent testing, every
time I cradle the Ipaq, Win XP hangs, regardless of what else is open. The
Ipaq has a message "trying to establish a connection" for a few seconds,
but the XP cursor and everything is totally locked up. Can't even
Control-Alt-Delete, I have to hard reboot to get the PC back. removing the
Ipaq from the cradle, or the USB cradle connector from the PC has no
effect. I don't have speakers, but plugged in a headset, and when it
freezes, the PC also produces a repeated beep- not the high-pitch beep like
a Win98 error, but more like a thumping sound, which I suppose is a new
WinXP alert sound of some kind.
I tried everything I know how to do (including making sure the ActiveSync
settings on the PC are set to not synch or update anything (files,
calendar, etc), but I'm way behind the technology knowledge curve (and
couldn't find a MS activesync group to post to) so any ideas that anyone
has would be greatly, greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Keith R
