Hi

I deal with data that is often presented in a text format the columns
separated by Spaces when viewed using courier font it all lines up into
tables,

I then need this data in a spreadsheet, currently I am copying it over by
hand, (printing it then typing it back in(

Blurgh.... BORED each day generates 100 entries, and Ive been doing this for
the last year, and I'm bored stiff with it.

Is there anyway I can format it I can almost just copy and past it in??

if I just past it gives me a row for each line but enters all the data for
that row in cell/column 1

is there a way I can do this or do I need to buy a cleaver gerbil?

TIA

Tom

In Excel, you can select what file type you want to open. For example, you
can open a .txt file in Excel. Excel will (generally) automatically open
the Text Import Wizard which walks you through the process of segregating
the data in the text file into columns. From the situation you describe,
you would want to select "Delimited" on the first screen then click Next.
Delete any checkmarks in the delimiter section then place a check in the
Space delimiter box. You will see preview of your data. Click Next. The
third screen gives you the option of formatting or skipping columns in the
data. Do this as desired then click Finish. Your data should now
(hopefully) be neatly segregated into columns.

Ahhh yea that worked kind!!!!

Problem I had was some cells have an empty value so instead of leaving that
cell empty and entering the data in the correct box to the right it
shufty'ed everything over on that row

No probs, because I sorted it, if I don't select "delimited" it just does it
exactly as I want ( I need to delete some columns anyway)

Thanks again

Highlight your dat
select from the excel toolbar
<Data><Text to Columns

Choose delimited and check only the bo
entitled Space

Of course, If everything is lined up nicely with Courier font, the fixed
width will do the trick even better than my original suggestion.

Also works!

you dont want to know how many hours i must have spent in the past 2yrs
doing these by hand!

It's a little difficult to follow what you have. I think you said that
when you import this data into Excel, that you get all the columns of the
original into one column in Excel with all the original columns separated by
spaces. And that you need to have each original column in a separate column
in Excel. Is that right?
If so, look at Data - Text to Columns.
Post back if this is not what you want or you need more help. HTH
