Hi all

I'm currently running Windows 98 on my home PC. I'm thinking
of moving on to Windows XP. Could someone point me to some good resources like
books or websites so I can get started, thanks.

Hallo greywolf,

This is a part of my reply to

you.

You could upgrade from Windows 98 to Windows XP by installing XP on
top of 98, in theory you won't need to reinstall anything. However, I
strongly advice against this kind of upgrade because it usually give
so much problems that you'll end up reinstall from scratch anyway.

My advice is to backup all your data e.g. your word documents,
pictures and everything you will ever need again to one or more CDs,
you won't need to backup your programs, as they will only work when
installed properly. Next make sure that ALL important data is backed
up, and that you have drivers for your modem or network card.

Next insert the XP CD and do a fresh install. You can do this by
removing the Windows 98 partition and formatting it with NTFS
file system.

Now you have a clean system and you can start by installing all
necessary drivers and all programs that you use. Finally you can copy
your data from your backup back you the My Documents folder.

Regards

Ps. Please do not forget to backup. Even if you go for the first
option, make a backup of all your data.

Hi Gary, how about http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/default.asp?
Lots of great information there.

And mine is to reject that as an initial approach. Upgrade has improved
over the years and win98 to XP (on adequate hardware - a very important
aspect anyway) normally goes well and saves a lot of hassle in
reinstalling everything. DO an upgrade in the first instance: if it
goes wrong you can still do the clean install, the converse is not true.

See Gary Woodruff`s article on upgrading to XP at
