Greetings,

I just moved into a new apartment and I'd like to know if my neighbors
are on the same dsl network as myself. I'm nervous about people packet
sniffing my internet traffic. Is there some kind of application, or
series of command line inputs that will tell me if someone is using the
same dsl line? I'm a newbie when it comes to networking, but am a
quick study with applications.

Thanks in advance...

Justin,

DSL puts one modem on each phone line, ie 2 wire pair running to the phone
office. The closest that your neighbours are to you is thru the first gateway
(router) outside your modem. You have separate phone lines to the phone CO, and
ATM circuitry to the gateway. Your neighbours are no closer to you than anybody
else on the Internet, or at least all the other customers of your ISP.

But it's good to be paranoid - to a point. Be sure to use a good layered
security strategy, and you will be safe.
