I've bought a new Dell PC (WinXP) and trying to network with old (Win98) system, through Linksys Router. I got brave and tried to do this on my own-- looked simple. Followed XP Network Wizard instructions carefully, using OS CD, but does NOT work: The network neighborhoods just don't show the other PC, and when I try to access the neighborhood on the new PC, says I don't "have permission !" Now, I had a previous network set up, between old system and a laptop (WinXP)-- someone else did that set up. I did not change any of that-- I just ran the wizard over the old config. I Did change the Network name in the process on all PC's. Thanks in advance for your help-- I'm shut down !

Tell the Wizard that the computers connect to the Internet through a
"residential gateway". Other options will block file and printer
sharing on the network.

If that doesn't fix it, try these tips:

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/ic_firewall.htm

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/network_protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot/netbt.htm

4. Run "ipconfig /all" on XP and look at the "Node Type" at the
beginning of the output. If it says "Peer-to-Peer" (which should
actually be "Point-to-Point") that's the problem. It means that the
computer only uses a WINS server, which isn't available on a
peer-to-peer network for NetBIOS name resolution.

If that's the case, run the registry editor, open this key:

HLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbt\Parameters

and delete these values if they're present:

NodeType
DhcpNodeType

Reboot, then try network access again.

If that doesn't fix it, open that registry key again, create a DWORD
value called "NodeType", and set it to 1 for "Broadcast" or 4 for
"Mixed".

Sure enough, the firewall was enabled on the new unit . . . When I disabled, everything came alive. One further configuration question

RE: Duplicate folders in Neighborhood
When I look in the Neighborhood of the old PC, I see that a duplicate (Shareddocs2) and a duplicate printer item were created. So there are 4 folders when the other PCs just have 2: SharedDocs and Printer. How do I deal with this ? I don't see "delete" options on these folders--

You're welcome, Brad.

If the extraneous objects appear in My Network Places on Windows XP,
right click and delete them.

If they appear in Network Neighborhood on Windows 95/98, there's no
explicit way to delete them. They'll automatically disappear in time.

Hi Steve:
Did try your advice: The extaneous folders originate on the "old PC" and do show up on the new XP system-- now these are folders from a previous, older network configuration. I tried deleting on the XP system-- right click has no option for delete, just as old PC also does not have delete option.

I tried disabling file and printer sharing on the old system and restarting; then re-activating file and print sharing-- duplicates just re-appear. Any other ideas ?
