I am having a big problem and when I browsed this
newsgroup I found many repetitions and no answers that
work.My cd drives are no longer recognised (registery
damage, incomplete information) I tried uninstalling cd
drives and they were found as new hardware but still same
problem = unusable. Uninstalled secondary IDE same deal.
detected, IDE works fine, cd drives useless. Then Media
player began dying on opening files of any type, finally
windows explorer says 'sorry for inconvienience must die
now'anytime I browse my computer. I eventually deleted HD
reinstalled windows xp pro and everything was fine now two
days later same deal. I have an up to date active virus
scanner and all windows updates. I have seen this problem
in part in at least 10 postings here in last 3 days. Is
there a cure anywhere? I don't have time to reintall again
I need to do uni work

If it isn't a virus/worm, there's a possibility that a Windows Update might
have caused the problems. It is not unheard of that some of the Windows XP
Updates can cause some bad problems on some systems. Try to remember when
the problem first started, and go to Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs,
and then starting with the most recent Hotfix, uninstall, one at a time and
reboot and see if the problem is fixed. Make sure that your firewall is
enabled, in case you remove a security update that patches holes allowing
the likes of Sasser and Blaster to infect your system.
