New updates prevent closing window to respond to newsgroup messages

I updated Windows yesterday and Windows Defender this morning. Now, every
attempt to write a new message or to respond to an existing message opens
the dialog box where the message can be typed (as expected) -- but,
suddenly, this box does not have any to close if I change my mind about
sending the message, and it cannot even be moved around the screen to
display information hidden behind it.

What is going on here? Is there a fix, or should I use System Restore to go
back in time? Unfortunately, Windows Defender said that once installed, it
could not be uninstalled -- I hope that does not also apply to System
Restore.

I am using Win XP-Home Edition.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Ignore my question, please. I finally was able to move the dialog box by
exiting Windows and then moving the box that was still on the desktop. That
brought the "X" into view, and I haven't had any problems since doing that.
I'm not sure why this happened following the upgrade -- maybe just a
coincidence, but at least it turned out to be a very minor inconvenience.
