This update just appeared for download, and it is associatged with Directx,
but it does not state which version. I have the 8.x since the 9.x version
appears to be causing some problems, so have never downloaded and installed.
I am running Windows XP Home and wonder if this update would cause any
problems, it does not state any specific version of Direct x that is
affected.

Joel,

I installed this update this AM - this is what it said - I assume it is 9.0b
version

"DirectX 9.0b End-User Runtime"

819696 - is not dx9.0b. It's a patch for dx before 9.0b.
The 9.0b install is a separate and different update.

Here's what win update says (your confusing the two):

Security Update for Microsoft Windows (819696)
Download size: 948 KB, 1 minute
An identified security issue in Microsoft DirectX could allow an attacker to
run programs on a computer running Microsoft Windows. The attacker would
first have to send you an e-mail message or entice you into visiting a
malicious Web site. You can help protect your computer by installing this
update from Microsoft.

Ok, I read the info prior to posting, but it is not specific to which Direct
x. So, the matter is solved and I have installed the patch.

this is a security patch for buffer over run security in Direct x thru 9. I
know I am waiting awhile to see it causes problems.
