I am getting a new system. Can I put the hard drives from my old system
into the new one and not cause any problems?

Sure, but XP may have a fit. You'll most likely have to do a repair
install.

Depends on whether you want to add them to the one coming with the
system, so as to transfer data (easy - plug in, with correct jumpering
and they will appear). You may then need to 'Take Ownership' of them
or folders on them to get access.

Or
If you are getting a machine without any drive and transferring them
complete with system. If it is a retail version you would need to start
off by booting to the CD and doing a repair install, so as to match the
system to the new motherboard. That will also uninstall any updates
(including SP1), and you must ensure you enable the firewall before you
go on line *even for a minute* to get those. Also it would need
activating again, by phoning in.

If it is an OEM system tied to the original machine it may not be
transferred, so you would need to buy and install a new copy, and
effectively start over
