Hi everyone, hope you can help me with this problem. I just bought a new
system (see link for specs) and so far in my first day of owning it, it has
froze up on me 5 times. When it does, I am not able to do anything not even
move the cursor or open task manager. It happens even when the computer is
idle.

Freezing, especially on a new computer suggests a hardware problem.
If the computer is new, contact the manufacturer for warranty support
and possible replacement.

I can't find your link, but do you have a Dell Dimension 9200 by any
chance? I had a similar problem on my Dell desktop. It would freeze at
random times for about 30 seconds each time. Apparently it was a problem
with the driver for one of the DVD drives - I can't recall exactly which
drive it was.

Go to the dell support page, enter your serial number and see if it
recommends any driver updates. The fix should be there somewhere.

HI Mschombs--

Your link didn't make your post, but as well as hdw I'd like to know if you
have AV scanned and spyware scanned and done the other common sense things
that might make your CPU demand more efficient?

Have you defragged at all?

Defragging with a decent defrag every day will make a huge dent inefficient
resource/CPU use.

Perfect Disk has a 5 month full functionality trial on now for Windows
Vista.

If you run Win One Care, it has its own spyware scanning, so you don't need
Windows Defender which ships with Vista turned on.

Good luck,

CH

G'day there, I'm having exactly the same problem with my Dell 9200 which is
only 3 months old so will try your idea of the driver. When I did the upgrade
I remember there being problems with a DVD driver so I'm hoping you're right.
Another problem I'm having is the little office assistant. I changed it to
that annoying red blob thingy before upgrading to Vista and now when I go to
change it I'm told I don't have enough memory for the task... get out... this
thing has a HUGE memory!!
Bion, if you can solve this one, you'll be a legend in this Aussies eyes!

Cheers.

Just had a chance to look at my vista machine, and it's specifically
this update : "Philips DROM6316 30/2/2007 474kb" found on the Dell
support page which fixed the problem for me.

Sorry, I'm still a beginner on Vista, I don't even know what office
assistant is. Although googling shows it could be a common problem.
