now, everytime I turn on computer, a black screen with white print comes up
briefly saying xp home or xp restore? screen will revert to home in 3,2,1-I'm
paraphrasing, but thats the jist of it-in the past I just restored to before
using msconfig, but I just reloaded xp not to long ago-(viruses) and didnt
have a restore point before then-I could live with it, its just anoying-I get
worried I'm going to touch the keyboard during this screen and screw
something up-(something screw up in windows? say it aint so-)

Hi,

Click start/run, type "C:\boot.ini" (without the quotes) and click ok. This
will open boot.ini in notepad. Click edit/select all/edit/copy. Open a reply
to this message, then click in the message text area. Hit ctrl+v to paste
the contents, then send the post for examination.

thanx for your time rick, but I'm getting that confused feeling after reading
your answer -is what u suggest going to send a report on my computer
out?-maybe I didnt make clear my question-anytime I use msconfig, from then
on I have a new screen(as described) that comes up briefly after I turn on
the computer- the 3 " _ " symbols flash in the upper left corner, (like
normal) then, before the windows loading screen that normally happens next,
this screen comes up--says pick windowsxp home or recover-will revert to home
in 3, 2, 1-then it starts loading like normal-typing and running msconfig
obviously triggers this screen to start-in the past, if I did a quick system
restore, it stopped coming up, but I dont have a restore point for before
this time any longer-

Hi,

What I am suggesting is that you post a text copy of the file I mentioned
for examination. I believe what you are seeing is triggered there, but I
won't know for sure until you do. If you want to see what a normal boot.ini
looks like, here is mine:

[boot loader]
timeout=3
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

The last line is to load the Recovery Console without the CD, this will not
exist on a normal installation. Compare yours against what you see here.

[boot loader]
timeout=3
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

wow rick-that was nifty-just like a little leprecan-as u can see, the only
difference is the 2 instead of 1-no help, right?

Hi,

Yes, the difference is only in the "2", and all it means is that your WinXP
installation is on the second volume of the hard drive. Nothing wrong with
that. The 3 count delay is because, like me, you have the Recovery Console
installed locally. Nothing wrong with that either.

with something else-I dont want to go into alot of detail cause I'm not a

recovered from after I unplugged it for awhile, but now it doesnt load
startup screen quickly anymore-icons fill in one at a time instead of
lightning quick like it used to-some new errors in event manager, etc. was
wondering if I could do a nondestructive disk recovery-(hp 1disc out of
7-dont lose loaded programs) to restore registry and whatnot-what will that
do to sp2 that I just installed from a disk?-do u know about these hp
proceses?-windowsxp comes installed, and they sent me 7discs to either fully
rewrite hardrive-reload os, or just the first disk and dont lose loaded
programs, but computer still starts up like its new again-have to resignup
everything, ect.--

Hi,

Do you have a digital camera? If so, take a picture of the startup screen
you are seeing and send it to me privately (don't post it on the group,
sucks up too much bandwidth), use the email address I use here and use the
subject line "per req" (without the quotes) to get past my filters. Just so
I can be sure of what you are seeing.

Whether or not the recovery procedure will help depends on what the problem
is. If it's in the operating system, then yes it may. If it's hardware, then
no it won't.
