Does the new sp1a update have the necessary patches to
prevent msblast.exe from harming OS? I'm wondering what
needs to be done once and for all. Will sp1a prevent this
worm from infecting my os?

No, the SP1a wont prevent the virus to infect your computer. As I know, the
defferent SP1 with SP1a is SP1a doen't include the JVM [Java Virtual
Machine].
Both SP1 and SP1a release long before the security hole found and the worm
release. So I think you should download the patch from

No.
In order to keep your computer safe from harm and problems you need to
download *all* the patches that http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com says that
you need as a "critical update".
