New processes interrupt

When working in Windows, how can I prevent a new process or application from going "on top" when it finishes loading? For example, say I'm working in Internet Explorer, and I decide to launch MS Word. The new Word window will go on top of the IE window (which becomes inactive). Thus, if I'm typing a URL into IE, I'll end up typing part of it into MS Word because that window becomes active. Is there any way to keep new windows from becoming automatically active? Thanks very much.

If I understand you correctly, what you want is to keep an application
from stealing focus. You can easily do that with tweakUI, which is a
part of Windows XP Power Toys.

Good luck

Thanks, Roger! That sounds exactly right. Unfortunately, I can't get TweakUI to install, but once I do, I'm sure your suggestion will work.
