new password? a virus?

i have two computers with XP home
Dell desktop w/ XP disk
HP laptop w/o XP disk
first owner of laptop said he did not
receive the disk with purchase from CompUSA.
i do have the drivers cd. [resource cd]

both units have XP decal with reg. #.

recently the laptop will not open
up completely. it keeps asking me
for a password which i did not install.

maybe a virus? pword hint "guarding white"

i boot off the desk top XP cd and start in
rescue mode and that gets me to
C:\windows.

can i reload windows from rescue mode
w/o loosing .doc .xls .jpg etc email etc.

any simple way to strip off password?

Since you are booting off the Dell CD, that is most likely a Dell feature.
Also since it is a Dell CD, it most likely will not work on the HP.

Depending on how the CD manufacturer set up their CDs, determines if any or
all data is lost.
Check the manual and/or contact the manufacturer for details.
Many OEMs now use a recovery partition instead of CDs, again, check the
manual for details before taking a chance on destroying the recovery
partition by using an incorrect CD.
