Released yesterday...if you have an nVidia chip set on your vid, and want the best out of directx9, then I would check these out...they ain't betas!

http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

(Tip for any newbies out there....don't lose your old drivers...later ones may not always be an improvement and you might want to swap back):spin:

WARNING WILL ROBINSON

Careful folk ... if you have a TNT2 or gF2 then stick with the 30's drivers. ;)

If you MUST give these new drivers a go, then be very prepared to re-install your old ones.

nVida's site does not make it clear to you that the 40's series are aimed at gF4's and above. If they do work for you, great. 8)

Good point, Mucks...while i did suggest keeping hold of old drivers, I'm sure you've saved some peeps some time and hassle...nVidia and i assume too much!!

(But having a GeForce4, I just installed the drivers and they boosted my 3Dmark2003 score by around 50 points!!!!.....wow...how dismal is that?)

3Dmarks, 50 points, wow ... mucks mumbles sarcastically

Sorry 1nt, never even D/L that program. :D

I'm just getting a little tired of the poor folks out there with the lesser nVida cards, thinking they're going to get a 50% 30% 10% increase on speed ...

... the only way that's going to really happen is if they get a faster car. I haven't seen any petrol or oil that makes my car go any faster.

nVida state it themselves ... improvement designed for FX cards.

40's series drivers for gF4 and above
30's series for anything else ... and you'll still be able to run 95% of the games on the market today.

Name me one piece of software that "needs" DX9 ... ;)

Mucks ;)

LOL...I know loads of people who've got GeForce4's, eagerly downloaded a copy of 3DMark2003, ran it and then immediately took it off their machine 'cos they're so disappointed in the score compared to what they were getting with 3Dmark 2001. My score, too, is poor, but I just love watching the fighter planes in the first test:D

You're right about there being no apps that use DX9 yet, but it's out, so hey, I must have it!!!

As for Detonator drivers...they're just bug fixes now...but this latest set is the only one that has worked properly for me...I've been using my original Abit Siluro drivers that came with the card:crazy:

I have a good friend who I use as a “test bed” for any game.

He does nothing constructive but play games … he gets them before release … it is only recently, well 12 months or so, that he “invested” in a gF4 Ti4200 … from a TNT2 M64 pro 16Mb … yes he is absolutely ecstatic with what he can “see” and do.

He knows nothing about computers and even less about which drivers to use never mind where to get them from. So, on my weekly visit I check out his system by installing any new drivers. The 40’s do suite his system the best.

You should have seen his face when I installed his 4200. :D

Well if his card allows him to run UT2003 with all the graphics at max, suggest that he tries this...In the graphics setup screen, make sure that every option is set to high or highest (whatever is rated as the max), then check every graphics option...as soon as he checks the last one, so that everything is on, a great deep voice of the game announcer should boom out: "HOLY SHIT!". I sometimes go in and reset everything just to hear it...:D

:D

I'm printing that off now ... and I'll make sure his speakers are at a reasonably high volume. ;)

You are incorrect by saying that the 40s are only for GF4s. I have been running them ever since they were betas, and consequently installed every version since and they work flawlessly on my GeForce2 MX, a very outdated card. Even though I'm not a huge gamer, it works in every game I've tried and with improved performances.

...I'd have to agree with you while the GeForce5800 was nVidia's only response to the top end radeons, but i'm afraid the new GeForceFX 5900 is going to be putting ATI in their rightful place again m8..and that place is 2nd...;) :D 8)

I must admit, I don't like 3D mark 2003, somehow it doesn't look as interesting as 2001, but it's more taxing to the system so it's staying ;)

I have the geforce4 ti 4400. I had an Athlon 800, could still run UT2003 on the Holy Shit setting :) but newer things like C&C generals were crawling :( So I decided to get the fastest CPU my motherboard could support (would have bee an ath1.4 at 200mhz fsb but finding those is like finding gold dust... so I ended up with a 1.3 Duron). It boosted my 3D mark (03) from about 859 to 995. Performance increase was noticable in C&C too.

So.... then I download these new drivers. 3D mark suddenly jumped to 1301, which I found VERY suspicious! However, C&C was also about 20% faster so I don't know what Nvidia did in these drivers but it seems to be something quite good! Goes to show that you can always have more efficient code I guess

There's a fella selling an Athlon 1.4 Here

He's in Florida, USA, wants $35.00 for it, which, with P & P & currency exchange fee, would work out to around £35.00, maybe a little less.

Good coding and overclocks to 1.58 as well, if you're interested.

Unfourtunetly, I don't think so. Last I checked, the 5900 was about $200 US more expensive than the Radeon 9800. That's quite a difference. $500 US for a video card is outrageous.

Oh, and ATi is Canadian, so I have to support them. ;)

Thanks for that! I was a bit slow off the mark with that one though :( However, managed to get an fsb266 one, so now all I need is my HB pencil and a diagram of what to do ;) It was only £15 so hardly the end of the world if I make a mess up :)

Oh I heard of 3Dmarks claim that nvidia were driver fixing and it seems to be perfectly true! I was amazed and bet heads will roll over that one! I guess while the drivers were better for some things, nvidia are getting desperate, which is shocking and shameful for a company I previously had a lot of respect for :(

...Totally agree about the pricing m8, which is of course a deciding factor when buying, but my comments were about pure performance. Hopefully, the prices will level out after a while...I reckon all companies struggle to decide what to charge at first, test out the market and then quickly adjust, so look out for quick drops in the price of 5900's as sensible peeps like u and me refuse to cough up that amount of dosh!:D . My choice of vid is usually based on what the software needs, so Half-Life 2, Doom 3 and Quake4, for example will be making my choice for me...even if that means buying Canadian;) :D 8)
