Hi All,

I just formatted C on a local win98/winXP dual boot computer.
Win98 is installed on the C: drive and WinXP is installed on
the D:/ drive. I'm using the WinXP boot manager to do the
dual boot.

This computer is in a network with 4 other winXP computers via
an 8 port Linksys Router w/WAN connection to Internet

All the NIC cards in all the computers are Intel Pro PCI 100+ cards

1@ Win98 cpu -- PIII 1ghz (30gb hard drive 768mb memory)
1@ WinXP cpu - PIII 1.4ghz (60gb hard drive 1gb memory)
2@ winXP cpu - P4 2.2ghz (120gb hard drive 1gb memory)

I have the cards set at "auto detect" but have tried all the
combinations of 100/hdp and 100/fulldp, etc.

I've tried the reg hack in HKLM///namespace
I've tried to give more priority to the 'background' tasks' and
the network through configuring the QOS bandwidth.
I've tried the Adaptive IFS reg hack
Ive tried transfers to the other computer via 'network places" (ie:
drive not mapped on sending computer) and i've tried transfers to
the mapped drive on the sending computer.

and a few other hacks, well i'm still at the same place.

I'm transfering a 258MB folder from the Win98 to the WinXPpro machine
and vis-versa for the testing. This folder consists of 19 rar files.
I've tried both 'move' and "copy" when doing the test. Neither of
these operations varies the time for movement of the file between
computers.

I'm using windows Explorer to do the transfer of the folder,
ie: right clik-->send to-->other folder-->etc.

Win98 to WinXP 1:45 min. - approx 19mb/sec
WinXp to Win98 3:00 min - approx 11.4 mb/sec
WinXp to WinXP 2:40 min - approx 12.88 mb/sec

This seems real slow compared to the what the network 'could' do,,

where am I going wrong?

all help will be accepted and i'll try just about anything that looks
good,,
thanks,

Bob,

have you tried disabling the antivirus and firewall to make the test?
Does the router support 100mbps connections?
is it a hub or a switch?
is there a collisions light flashing during transmission?

RT

Hi rafael,

The router is a linksys router w/8port switch

i've tried disabling all the antivirus and the firewalls on all
machines for the test with very little change

When transferring files I've watched the collision lite on the router
and don't see it coming on at all.

This is a strange on because before (a month ago) the network speed
was a lot higher,

I can't believe that it is involved with the dual boot machine because
if I turn off that machine or disconnect it from the network I still
see the slow transfer rates between the XP machines.

I'm still looking,

Bob

Bob,

This might be a long shot but check the MTU on the router. It should be the
same between the router and the computers. Usually 1492

take a look at
http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/280/

To make sure that things are alright at the computers connect 2 computers
together by using a cross cable (bypassing the switch) and copy the files.
If it is faster this way, then for sure you have a problem with the switch.
If things are the same, then you will know to check the computers and forget
about the switch.

*make sure that all computers are using the same network speed, try with
10mbFd then put it up to 100

Hi Rafael,,

well good news and 'not so good' news.

the MTU tweak helps and didn't help, here are the results.

The MTU entry was NOT in the registry on any of my winXP machines or
on the Win98 machine.

I entered the tweak (from link below) on first a single winXP machine
and tried the transfer:

win98-to-winXP 1.02min - 33.28mb/sec (old 19mb/sec)
increase of 75% in speed

then I entered the MTU tweak from another site for the win98 machine
and tried the same transfer:

winXp to win98 3.00min 11.4mb/sec NO CHANGE

then I tried the file transfer from two winXP machines with ONLY the
tweak in the SENDING machine:

winXP to WinXP 29sec 73.68mb/sec ONE HELL OF AN INCREASE

646% increase....

Then I tried entering the tweak for MTU on the RECEIVING winXP
machine. This way both machines have the same reg entry of MTU=1500

winXP to winXP 29sec 73.68mb/sec NO CHANGE from above

It seems that the sending machine is the only machine that the
MTU=1500 tweak affects -- NOT -- the receiving machine.

So the increase to 73mb/sec is pretty damn good,,, now I have to work
on the win98 to winXP file transfer speed.

I really want to thank you for your input and help,,, you saved the
day and gave me another entry in my TWEAK XP files (about 25mb of data
on all sorts of XP tweaks i've been collecting for about 3 years)

Thanks again, if I find anything out about the winXP to win98 file
transfer I post under the same header..

Thanks again, hello from california,,

Bob,

I'm glad to help because I also learn or relearn this way.
Maybe the MTU number is too high for the win98 computer. Try 1492 in it and
see. I remember that in my win2k i couldn't use 1500 but 1492 was OK.

and your very welcome from Okinawa in the pacific ocean.
