For some reason my computer is not taking the repair, or new setup of windows
since I've had a new motherboard installed. . I would just format the HD ,
but I don't have the original xp cd key. Any thoughts as to why this might
be. Also if there is a way to get the key without buying anther one?

I'd be very grateful to know..

Jen,

First off, is the copy that you are trying to format the new HD an OEM copy?
If so, usually that copy is tied to the original motherboard and therefore
ruling out that you can install on the new motherboard.

Second, your hard drive has the key on it, but the XP on your hard drive
does not like the new MoBo and needs at least a Repair Install of XP, but
you need the key in order to perform the Repair Install...
Perhaps someone clever can think of a way to read your hard drive.

Okay, I don't know what OEM means. I have all the same hardware from my old
computer yet just a new motherboard. I've tried to repair it and it never
asked for a key so at least that much is good, or very very bad. My XPPro cd
is the same. Repairing leads me to errors such as not being able to copy all
the files. Strange I also tried to do a new install and the very end of it
was a blue screen the said

KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR

TECH INFO : win32k.sys STOP:0X0000007A (OXE118AC9C, 0X00000E,
0XBF8ED7DD, 0X0E45680

You think it's and actual compatibility dislike. mobo not good for comp or
processor?

What brand computer was it? Sometimes they use what's known as
tattooing. Fancy way to say that the System/OS is looking for an
imbedded serial number in the hard drive and or in the bios chip on
the mother board.

You have to see an "authorized" service center for this kind of crap.
I've received boot disks which will brand a new hard drive for the OEM
CD from the manufacturer of the system, but the BIOS tattooing is
another matter. Major brand laptops are known for this.

Post an email. ;)
