Hello,
MB needs to be replaced.
Informed new MB has different chip set and a clean install needed.
Have a cloned image on a external hd.
Have a image of C partition on a second internal hd.
Are these no longer of any use after a clean install?
take care.

That is correct. They are no longer of any use because they were cloned from
a disk installed on the old hardware. I don't know where you got the
information that the new motherboard will require a clean install instead
of the usual repair install. If you are sure that information is correct,
you'll need to do the clean install. If you got that information from "a
friend's cousin who does something with computers" you might want to try
the cloned image with a repair install. The worst that can happen is that
it won't work and you'll need to do the clean install.

Yes...one hopes for the best but expect the worse.

Did you supply to them your OS disk ?

Hello,
Yes.
I had created a slipstream with SP2.
Asked them not to do any Microsoft updates.
I have backups "on disc" of all the security updates.
A local shop in business for 16 years, has decent reputation.

They are of use. I would not use the onboard second hard drive image file.
Rather would restore the XP image from the external hard drive to that
onboard second hard drive after installing XP on the primary hard drive.
But, not opt for any mbr or partition boot record restoration of that image
restore. You just need the data. This in event, for some reason, a repair
install fails or produces unanticipated results. Clean install XP. You can
restore your previous settings with the restored partition, and all your
personal data, if stored there, is available. After all done, just wipe the
second hard drive and use it for onboard secondary storage.
