When I bought this hard-drive I asked all the (tech) ha
ha sales people if the motherboard I bought would carry a
200GB hard-drive with no problem. Of course they
said "yes" and these were guys that owned a small
computer shop!!!! The board I purchased was a MSI (MICRO
STAR INTERNATIONAL) WITH a AMD Athlon XP/Athlon/Duran
processor. The exact code is KM2MCombo-L(601-6738-010
K7,KM266,5.1 ch S/W Audio, Lan. The chipset is VIA KM266
based. Supports 1GHz Athlon/XP 2600+ processor. FSB
200/266 MHz. The first that I read in the Maxtor
installation guide is that windows would only handle up
to 137GB and in order to get the full 200 GB out of the
drive is to use aUltra/ATA PCI card tried and failed;
next step was to use XP Home Svc. Pk1((SP1) or higher?????

ANY HELP WOULD BE OF VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Shaun:
When I installed a Maxtor 160gb drive, the
directions said to use Maxtor's tool to format it and that tool subsequently
added a EnableBigLBA key to the registry. Have you tried using the tool
that came with the drive, maybe it will add this key.
According to the maxtor doc, not only do you have to have XP-SP1 or higher,
but you also have to install that registry setting. Maxtor's tool installed
it automatically when I used it to format the drive.

"Once you have installed the latest Service Pack, you must also install and
run the Windows version of Maxblast to enable complete support of larger
drives..... Maxblast checks for the existence of Windows 2000 XP3 or
Windows XP SP1 and installs the EnableBigLBA patch into the Windows
Registry. Installing the latest Service Pack without running the Maxblast
setup will not fully enable large drive support and may lead to data loss."

I have never come across any of these problems. Here is what I would
suggest. Do not use the PCI Card that came with the hard drive.
Connect the hard drive to the motherboard. Boot up and see if the BIOS
sees the drive. If it shows up in the BIOS as 137 GB, you need either a
BIOS update or you will actually need to use the PCI Card. If it shows
the full size, then you just need to format the drive with XP Setup (SP1
or SP2 integrated is required to get over 137 GB). You can install with
XP (no Service Packs) and then install SP1 or SP2 and create a second
partition out of the remaining disk space. Good luck :)

Use Partition Magic to resize HD and bypass 137Gb limit. (SP1 or SP2
required.)
I had same problem with SATA maxtro 200Gb. Partition magic would show only
137Gb / 100% use
After I installed SP2 (didn't bother with SP1) PM showed additional space as
empty. Quick resize and I had full 200Gb.
Remember to use PM8.0.
