I recently upgraded my mainboard and CPU, completed the
repair/reinstall process, yet am having COM port
troubles. My modem is detected automatically but is
assigned COM 3. However, there is no COM 3 port created
by XP. I've manually added COM 3 but it doesn't work.
I've tried many other combinations, restarts, another re-
install of XP, etc. I still can't get the modem and port
to align. Do I need to wipe my hard drive and start with
a fresh install of XP?

Most modems use PCI slots which have nothing to do with COM ports. Do you
not have a PCI modem?

Yes, it is a PCI modem. In device manager when cheking
the properties of the modem, there are "port settings."
It provides options for assigning the modem to a
particular port. Perhaps I'm using the wrong terminoligy
calling it a COM port. The problem is that I can't seem
to get the port number of the modem to have a
corresponding port assigned to it.

Does your modem work OK? The port assigned to your modem doesn't have to
correspond with a physical com port on your motherboard. If you have com 1
and 2 on your motherboard it would be normal for the modem to be on com 3.
Let Windows assign the port and check out your modem, it should be OK.

There are very few PCI controllerd modems on the market
and those that are cost an arm and a leg for no better results.
Most winmodems or software modems use a virtual com port
either com 3 or com 5. You don't say whether the modem
works or not. A better place for more information about this
would be on the newsgroup comp.dcom.modems. There
are very knowledgable people that hang in this NG.
good luck

The ports shown in device manager are your physical com ports. Your modem
port isn't supposed to show up there. If you do force a com port there with
the same number as the one you modem is using, there's a real good chance
that your modem will quit working afterward.
