I am using Outlook XP, and when new mail comes in, it pops up that
little box on the bottom right of my screen. I would prefer that it
pops up a message box and asks if I want to read the message, like it
did in the previous version of outlook. Is there any way for me to
have Outlook XP do that, or did microsoft remove that feature?

The reason I like it better is that I step away from my desk a lot,
and I am used to seeing the message box on my screen to indicate that
I have new mail. in XP, that box goes away, and when I come back, I
don't wind up realizing i have new mail until a few hours later. There
is that icon on the bottom right, but I really don't want to have to
look at that, I like the older version message box - it forces me to
press yes or no to go away.

Click Tools, then Options. On the Preferences tab, select the E-mail Options
button. From the resulting dialog, choose the Display a notification message
when new mail arrives check box.

You're done.

I don't see that choice in Outlook 2003 - what version are you using?
(i prev said is was using office XP, but I am using office 2003, not
XP - MS can definately be a little less confusing when naming their
versions) is it available in outlook 2003, or just older versions? The
only choice I see is the "Display a New Mail Desktop Alert", which has
that system tray notification box that disappears after a few seconds.

Chaim,

In Outlook 2003 the "Display a New Mail Desktop Alert" is the newer feature
that done away with the one that you are used to. If you want the "Alert" to
stay longer you should increase the amount of time it shows up and stays.
Also you even can change it from the transparent to the more noticeable
shade. Hope this helps.

Robin, thanks for your reply.

Wow, that really sucks. How can MS take away a feature??? Would it have
been too hard to keep it there, along with the "new" feature, so i'm
not forced to change if i don't want? The max it lets me keep the "new"
feature is 30 seconds, and if i'm away from my desk, when i come back
it is long gone, whereas the "old" feature worked for me perfectly.
Give me a choice here, that's all i'm asking.

If anyone who is reading this has any say in what goes into outlook,
for the next version please either put back in the message box, or let
me make the "new" feature stay up indefinately until i click the "x" to
close it, instead of a max of 30 seconds. I would rather the message
box because I could dismiss it just by pressing "N" for No, without
having to use the mouse.

Use rules to keep a new message notification on top. Personally, I found
the feature REALLY annoying and turn it off first thing.
