Somehow, I managed to change a setting (this I know- not guessing) that
permanently has removed my notifications of new email from the tray, instead
of removing it just once.

So... how do I restore this? I don't know what I was thinking, but I can't
get it to return.

Thanks

Tools->Options->Email options->Advanced email options. Is there a check
mark missing from show envelopes in the notification tray?

There is now!! Thanks. I have no idea what I did to change that, because I
didn't go into the tools when it disappeared.

Well, right-clicking on the icon in the notification area and choosing Hide
Envelope could have that effect. Windows XP somtimes does it on its own as
well.
