Hi,

since I installed an Exchange 2000-server in a DMZ
the "new mail arrival notification" has become a bit slow
to react. Before the notification appeared instantly after
a new mail was delivered to the mailbox. Now it takes a
very long time but if you activate Outlook, for example
double clicking a message or changing to the callendar
view the message arrives and so does the notification icon.

Does anyone have a solution to this problem. It has
something to do with the Outlook vs server connectivity.

/Pelle

Pelle,

It sounds like your DMZ is blocking UDP packets. This is how Outlook knows
the server has new email to display in the Inbox. What version of Outlook
are you running? If you are using Outlook 2003 you can set up a static port
on the client side for UDP packets and then you can open this port on your
internal firewall.

Thanks,

Can you explain this in more detail please.

The Exchange server sends a UDP packet to the client telling the client
there is new email in the mailbox. If this UDP packet never arrives at the
client, then Outlook will not update the Inbox. If you click away from the
Inbox (select your Calendar folder, for example) then Outlook "polls" the
server for any updates instead of waiting for the UDP notification.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your reply,

we are running Outlook 2000 and XP in our environment.
Yes, I found some info on the UDP-matter but I haven't
looked in to it yet.

I'll see if I can get it working with my set-up somehow
without upgrading or fidling with the FW...

Thanks
