Finally moving from my 97 Dell to a P4 2ghz. In trying to re-install XP by
moving the disk drive over and booting from the XP Install CD, it tells me I
cannot do that because the system on the hard drive is new than the install.
It is, since the hard drive XP is SP2, and the install is SP1. How do I get
around this?

Umm if your new machine already HAS XP on it, WHY are you trying to
re-install?

You don't indicate what type of Windows XP install CD you are using.
Read the End User License Agreement (EULA) carefully to make sure it
allows you to transfer the OS to a new machine. Normally you need an
Upgrade or Full version (either sold in a retail BOX) of Windows XP to
be licensed to transfer the OS to a new computer. Note that IF you need
an earlier Windows version to qualify for the installation of a Windows
XP UPGRADE, you might need to have a valid license to install the
earlier OS on the newer computer.

IF you are licensed to install the OS on the new system you may need to
produce a Slipstreamed installation/repair CD. For a description of what
that is read the article at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slipstream_(computing)

But why is the OP trying to re-install XP on a new machine that already HAS
xp on it?

He's moving to a P4 2Ghz, it can't be a new machine? Are new P4's still
even available? I think he wants to move his hardrive from his old
machine to a newer (second hand) computer and keep his XP installation,
he will have to do a repair install to accomodate the newer hardware.
Maybe I misunderstand what he wants to do but that is how I read it.

I quote from the OP
"it tells me I cannot do that because the system on the hard drive is new

So if the new machine has XP SP2 on it, WHY is he trying to re-install XP
SP1?

moving to existing install to new hardware ...most likely needs to do a
"repair" install for the new stuff

But the new machine already HAS XP.....the addition of another HDD as slave
doesn't need a repair install.......does it?

Well, I quote:

"...trying to re-install XP by moving the disk drive over..."

I take it he wants to move his existing installation to new hardware and
he needs to do an In-Place Upgrade to deal with the hardware differences.

You seem to be missing the point.

He isn't planning on using a new OS. He's trying to use the old OS and
application installations without having to reinstall everything.

He MAY be upgrading his system with a new motherboard and CPU.

He's moving the boot drive from the older machine for use as the BOOT
drive in the newer machine. If he even got a new hard drive for the new
computer it's either being removed or demoted to a slave drive. That
results in the OS booting in a machine where the hardware isn't what the
OS expects. He would need to perform a repair install from the
installation CD to make the OS configuration match the different
motherboard. If his Windows XP installation CD predates SP2 it WILL
decline to repair the OS where SP2 has been installed.

So why not stop all the fannying about, and just install the applications on
the new machine without having to muck about re-installing SP1 on a machine
that already has SP2?

Shheeeeeesh! K.I.S.S.

What point? That the OP has a NEW machine (his words) with XP SP2 installed
on it, and is trying to do a re-install with a CD that is XP SP1?
Does the OP really want to make life as difficult as he possibly can?
And YOUR point was?

Even if the OP did a repair install, he would STILL have to re-install all
the applications.
Why doesn't he just install the old HDD as slave to get the data off, and
just install the applications on the new HDD? Far easier than farting about
with slipstreaming.

Correct. And then XP says I can't because the install is older than the XP
already on the drive. I'll look inot the slipstream thing. Thanks!

The new machine has nothing. A Pentium 4 board and processor, machine I
built from scratch (not latest and greatest but an upgrade I need).

Exactly the problem.

You will still have to re-install all your applications after a repair
install, so why not just install them on the new XP?

So why did you say in your original post (and I quote):
"it tells me I cannot do that because the system on the hard drive is
new than the install. It is, since the hard drive XP is SP2, and the
install is
SP1. "

If you are installing XP onto a BARE drive as you have now just said then
that error message could not POSSIBLY occur. Period.

Would you like to emnlighten us on what EXACTLY you are trying to do?
