I just swapped out the motherboard and have an OEM version of XP Home on the
hard drive. Is there a way to purchase just a new license only without
actually having to go through a reinstall?

No. You"ll need to purchase a "Full Version" of
Windows XP and perform a "Repair Install".

Example:

Not if you carefully follow the instructions
for a "Repair Install" as I suggested earlier.

Crap. I have already attempted to run Windows with the new MB and even ran
the MS activation when prompted. It failed saying it was invalid, I guess
since it was an OEM version from Compaq. I hope this doesn't screw up the
Repair Install.

I guess I have to put the old motherboard in, copy the drives, buy a retail
version, run Repair install with it and hope to hell it works. Crap. I wish
I could just buy a new license code and not have to jump through a bunch of
hoops. Crap. Thanks for the info.

I'm confused. By "Full Version" you don't mean a "Retail Version," do you?
The XP Home with SP2 - OEM would work for the Repair Install, right?
