I have a computer abroad that is connected via a dynamic IP adsl
service.
I would like to be able to talk to it without forking out for a fixed
IP (yes I know dynds or whatever give free fixed ones but...).
What I want is to install a program on it that emails me it's new IP
when it changes (particularly after powercuts).
Any such thing available?

IPSynchro might be what you're looking for:

Here is another one that maybe useful - eMailMyIP:
"Know the public IP Address of your home computer from anywhere in the
world. eMailMyIP is a simple utility that monitors your public IP, and
when it changes it sends you an email telling you what the new public
IP address is. You can even add comments to keep track of which
computers they're coming from..."

Ooops, it would be exactly what I'm looking for but you have to
re-install it every 6 months. %&^%%$ !

Sounds like it does what I want, thanks.

Aw, nuts. The author's site was streaming like cheezwhiz when I visited,
so I didn't get to see all of the info (it's why I linked to softpedia
instead, the download was reliable). Didn't see the bit about .NET
runtimes either, or I would've noted that too. Sorry about that.

Sorry for the hijacking but I downloaded this a couple of times and when
I dble/click I get 'failed to initialize properly' etc
Is it just me?

No problem.
Shame, because it would have been EXACTLY what I needed. Unfortunately
I can't be sure that I will be at my other computer inside any 6 month
period, nor that I would remember to re-install the software. I may
have to go with one of those free fixed IP service thingies.

I used to use Keep Me Posted.
http://www.windowsmarketplace.com/t...03:303:3:66:303:-1:-1:100:-1:1:7:-1:-1&stext=

It was quite nice when I was using it several years ago.

Looks like it may do the job too.

My plan is to set up my computer abroad with USB webcams and use it for
security monitoring. I know there is software specifically designed for
this (which I may have running too) but I want to be able to access the
puter as well.
Another problem is that there are quite a few power cuts there.
A UPS can shut it down ok but there is very little info on how to
switch it back on automatically or remotely.
I gather "boot on lan" might be a possibility? I may start a different
thread on this...

You should be able to set APM to resume the last state. (I don't
remember where it is, but I know I've seen it.)

If you guys are referring to eMailMyIP, you will never need to
re-install it. If anyone is having any initialization problems its
because they haven't updated their.Netframework1.1. Simply run the
Microsoft update wizard and install the latest patches for
..Netframework1.1. And lastly eMailMyIP has a comment feature so your
email notifications are distinguishable from each other if you're
monitoring multiple sites(ex. Tampa, NY, Work, Client abc, etc.).

eMailMyIP 2.0 is just out and you can get it at
http://www.scrammit.com/software.htm

Thanks guys, hope you enjoy the software.

The best solution in my opinion would be to just use VPN routers, but
you would need one static IP. Linksys makes an RV082 VPN router
(around $300) that can accept something like 30 tunnels. At your
camera sites you would use Linksys BEFVP41 's and configure them to
automatically connect to your static IP (where ever you are monitoring
from). When the power comes back on, the tunnels will automatically
come back up, and from there you could send a WOL request to get you
computers back up. These routers are very easy to set up - just make
sure to use different subnets at each location (ex. main site:
192.168.1.0, camera site a: 192.168.2.0, Cam site b: 192.168.3.0 etc.)

I know this is a freeware group, but I think your solution requires
hardware.
Sorry to the group for posting OFF content.
