New installation full of bugs?

I had what seemed like severe infestation. Shutdowns, auto restarts,
sluggish, lock ups, etc. Soooo, I just reloaded Windows XP from 7 recovery
Cds. As soon as I signed on the internet, I began getting shutdown messages.
Like when I had the blaster worm. Why is this happening? I can't get
enough time online to get to Windows Updates, or patches, or malicious
software removal tools or anything. Not every function is cooperating.
Can't pull up task manager. I even tried a CD called Hotfix that was burned
& given to me by Best Buy the last time my hard drive crashed. I'm guessing
it has SP2 on it? It seemed to load, but not install. I keep having to go
in & reselect the firewall setting because it doesn't stay fixed. What gives?

Start all over with the 7 CDs.
Be sure the computer is physically disconnected before you start.
After Windows XP is installed, enable the firewall:

This protects from most attacks while you update later.

Install Service Pack 2 either from CD or burned from another computer, both
options are Step 1 on this link:

Install your anti virus software.

Only when the above are completed do you connect the network cables.

Immediately after connecting the network cable get the latest Windows
Updates and update your anti virus.

Thank you Jupiter Jones for your reply. It was somewhat helpful. But I
found it to be a "catch 22" when it came time to enable the firewall. An
account needed to be there to select to firewall. In order to establish an
account, I needed to connect the phone line. But, with as much care as
possible, I was able to get farther than I had before. Made it to the update
site, where SP2 downloaded okay, but only made it halfway thru install. So I
am stuck again. I'll keep plugging away. As a last resort, I have requested
SP2 on CD. It should be here in 4 to 6 weeks.
