See 'File Types' from Explorer, Folder Options, and make sure the open
action is set to something like winword.exe "%1" (with the quotes).

be unable to remember any passwords for dialling
internet. and if i set the taskbar to auto hide on one

Sounds like a registry fault. See MS Technet for solution.
Autohide is probably set on a user-by-user basis.
3. generally extremely slow at doing anything.

What Spec PC do you have? What b/g processes are you running?
4. can't install my scanner says win95 someything need to
be installed

Drivers are probably too old. Download latest drivers from
manufactuere's website.
Don`t expect drivers on CD from 3-4 years ago to work on XP
when XP didn`t even exist?
5. can't get DVD player working says need to install
decoder driver. is the decoder driver supplied by the dvd-
rom maker specifically????

You need a DVD Player software such as PowerDVD 4 or later.
