I am trying to install windows xp over whats left of
windows 98 se on a laptop with a cd attached by a pmcia
card.

In the process I refomatted the laptop hard drive and
lost the cabs files of the windows 98se.

I keep getting a report that the cdrom cable is not
working . I can get it to work using a dos start up disk
and the dos drivers but I cant install the windows driver.

so the setup of xp always fails reporting
*** STOP:0x0000007B (0xFC90B63C), 0xC0000034,0x00000000,
0x00000000)

It suggests I run chkdsk/f to check for hard drive
corruption, I have done this but it says this is now
superseded by Scandsk which I have done but it reports no
coruption.
Hope you can help?

Suggestion:
Boot with DOS disk, load your CD drivers, then smartdrv.exe - format the
hard disk (you will loose everything so backup import personal files),
create a directory - call what you wish - example "C:\Software\WinXP_CD" and
copy the complete contents (at least the I386 folder) to the directory
created. Then navigate to the I386 folder on the harddrive and start setup
via DOS as follows:
"C:\Software\WinXP_CD\I386\WINNT.EXE /s:C:\Software\WinXP_CD\I386" - no
quotes
Note - you won't be able to format the harddrive during setup and another
drawback is you wont have NTFS formatted disk, although it can be converted
later (using the convert.exe program), you can see a substantial performance
hit as the cluster sizes using this method are less than desirable.
