New Hardware old OS

I have great new, faster hardware. Can I just transplant my hard disk into
the new computer and keep the existing OS and user apps?
 
You can transfer the hard drive but you'll have to do a Repair Installation
of XP to ensure that all the hardware changes are correctly identified and
re-configured.

As Cari said the minimum that you would need to do is a Repair
Install. See http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm for
detailed instructions.

Notes:
1. If your Windows XP is an OEM version (e.g. came bundled with a new
computer) and if the CD is a "System Recovery" disk rather than an
installation CD then you will not be able to do a Repair Install.
2. If your Windows XP is a "BIOS locked" OEM version then you will
not be able to activate it on the new hardware even if you do Repair
Install or a clean install. Your OEM Windows version is BIOS locked
if there is no "Activate Windows" entry in the Accessories - System
Tools menu.
3. If your Windows XP installation CD is for the original release or
service pack 1 versions and if your installed Windows XP has been
upgraded to service pack 2 then you will have create a new
installation CD with service pack 2 slipstreamed into it in order to
do a Repair Install. See the following websites for instructions:
