Temporarily disconnect the power lead from the old hard drive. Remember to
swap over the jumpers at the rear of each drive so that the new one is now
the master and the old one the slave.
Boot from the XP CD and install XP.
When it all appears to be running correctly, shut down the PC. Reconnect
the old hard drive (that is now the slave drive).
If you then want to format the old drive, after having copied off the
documents/MP3s, WMAs, WMVs, AVIs etc etc to your new drive, right click on
My Computer and select Manage. On the following screen, click on Disk
Management. The drives should appear on the right hand side of the screen,
from where you can partition, format and assign drive letters.
Remember that ALL installed software will have to be reinstalled since there
are no Registries for them in the newly installed XP. It would take
literally months to get them all from the old Registry to the new Registry,
so it really is much quicker to reinstall all the applications.
