I am building new computer and I need to have the contents of my old drive
installed on the new one. With xp pro what is the best way to do this? Copy
whole hard drive on cd and then install? What will be transferred, just files
or the xp system too? Will I have to re install all of my update files and
service pack also? I know this is probably simple to most, but this one
issue has kept me from upgrading for a long time. I must figure it out now.
Any responses are appreciated and thanks in advance!!

Hi,

To copy the contents of the drive on the old hard disk, you can use an
imaging tool from Norton known as Ghost.

But I recommend the following.

Since you are getting a new hard disk, it is best to install it from fresh
so that you get a updated version. Yes you will have to install the updates,
but since Windows XP SP2 is going to be released you can directly go for that
and get all the updates accumulated in one.

And you will have to reinstall the programs again on the new hard disk, you
can copy the data files from the old hard disk to the new hard disk.

Hi,

I'm doing the same thing... updating a HD.

NOT HAPPY JAN!

Microsoft clearly don't want anyone up upgrade a drive...

I checked in here for clues, first, downloaded Bootit. Which is no help. I
don't know who thought it would be.

I backup my files and made a floppy using ASR... Which then want to
repartition my HD where I'd put the backup.

Oh yea I had to remove and oil my never used floppy drive to get that to
work. Like it's way time there was a MS CD Burn solution to this.

I copied everything across using Lunix from a CD.

And thought I could just use my XP disks to "repair" the installation. That
sucked because the "repair" wanted the Admin password and I'd deleted the
Admin account for security and my password wasn't good enough.

I download Maxtor Max, still no luck.

I'm not interested in creating a new installation and loosing all my program
references.

Has anyone go any real clues that work for this and don't require me
purchasing Norton Ghost?

I have been trying for 2 days... It's like a maze of blind alleys and total
stinks. We do have to update hard drives sometimes MR Gates. It shouldn't be
difficult!
